Object is one of a series of sculptural works which I made in response to commercial love dolls. There is a violence implicit in adult toys, and they may provoke intense revulsion, yet I would argue they can also be redolent of tenderness, of loneliness and alienation. I hope this work will produce an empathic affect, and prompt us to question whether the hyper-consumption of capitalist culture informs the way we treat human bodies.
Rachel Claire’s visual arts practice encompasses drawing, print making and sculpture. Her recent work examines late capitalism, and its incursions into psychic and spiritual domains; she hopes it will prompt questions about consumerism in contemporary culture. During lockdown Rachel has been having technicolour dreams, and secretly cleaning her erasers on the Persian rug.
